Parking was at a premium.

Still, we prevailed, and managed to capture some nice sunset light. These two are so cute. So happy and in love with each other, always laughing, all of us were joking around the entire time. Jeremy was totally up for some climbing around the ruins, which made for some unique (*ahem*Spider-Man*ahem*) shots.

Sarah and Jeremy, here’s your Sneak-a-Peek — enjoy!

One last engagement session to post for now, it’s been a bit of a marathon! Here are a few images as a sneak peek for Mark and Debbie from their session on a lovely evening in Confederation Park here in Calgary. It’s easy to tell how in love these two are, they didn’t mind any excuse to kiss, at all! They also let me direct them around and were up for anything. Thanks to you both, looking forward to what promises to be a gorgeous wedding.

These two are super cute and came SO prepared to the session (with a change of clothes, each). Super easy to work with, it was a pleasure strolling around, even though we got bitten by the abundant mosquitoes more than once. Looking forward to shooting your wedding this month!
I had a lot of fun shooting these two, Amanda’s wishes to avoid anything cheesy were not only good direction, but gave us all a lot of laughs. Plus them being so photogenic doesn’t hurt at all! Here’s a sneak peek of a few images from the session…

Tuesday evening I got together with Ashley and Craig for a pre-wedding e-session. I met Craig for the first time as he’s recently returned from serving overseas. When they booked me last winter to photograph their wedding, I only met with Ashley.

I’m really happy that they went for the engagement session even though their wedding is later this very month — not only because I had a chance to take their photos and meet Craig, but because I had a chance to do some portraits during the time the cherry blossoms were still out! I’ve been dying to get at least a few shots before they fade away. I love cherry and apple blossoms. Here are a few images from the evening…

We had a great time at Eau Claire Park, it was a lovely evening and these two are naturally photogenic. Looking forward to photographing their wedding later this month!

This afternoon I had the pleasure of meeting with Jody & Dean for a fun outdoor engagement session… here’s your first look at some of their photos!

The one on the left looks like it was taken in the autumn instead of spring to me, since some of the trees still have berries(?) on them. Spring hasn’t quite sprung in Calgary yet. Today turned into a pretty nice afternoon, windy but warm. It feels really good to get outside to shoot, it’s been about four months since I’ve done a session outdoors. Calgary photography is kind of seasonal. Anyway, many thanks to Jody and Dean for a great session and for their willingness to sit on mushy lawns and lean up against dusty trees! I am very much looking forward to shooting the wedding next month.

This is a good time to mention a new policy for 2010: if you book me for engagement photography, you can apply the cost of an engagement session towards your wedding photography! Kind of a try-before-you-buy. Contact me if you’d like to take advantage of this offer.

Many couples mention that they don’t know if they really want or need engagement photos, especially if they’ve been engaged for a while.

On the other hand, I also speak with some couples who have specific purposes in mind for the photos from their engagement session (also called an e-session), such as:

• Engagement announcement in the newspaper
• To use on a wedsite
• As a part of a mailed engagement announcement or save-the-date
• To use on wedding invitations
• For custom reception items, like wine or water bottles
• As part of a photo slideshow to be shown during the reception
• For use on thank you cards, or on personalized stamps through Canada Post

Even though many couples don’t need or want photos for any of the above, I still always recommend having an engagement photo session prior to the wedding. Think of it this way — your wedding photographer is going to be very close at hand, and a significant part of one of the most important days of your lives.

If you’re getting your hair done for your wedding, most stylists get you to come in for a hair or makeup trial run, to eliminate any problems the day of your wedding. Most brides and grooms will go in for multiple dress and tux fittings. Wedding photography is important, an it also deserves some preparation — think of engagement sessions like that. They’re a practice run for both the photographer and the couple.

There is enough stress and new things happening on a wedding day. Having been through an engagement session allows you to welcome your photographer back as a trusted vendor on the big day, and to get used to each other.

I also believe it results in more natural, relaxed wedding photos, having had the experience of the engagement session. Wouldn’t you rather get any awkwardness you might be feeling about being in front of a camera out of the way with the engagement photos? Especially if you don’t have anything important planned for them! In that case, there’s really no risk, just an hour of your time to run around outside with the one you love.

The e-session really allows me to know what you are like to photograph, and takes away that element of uncertainty for me, too.

Remember, there is no rule about when to get engagement photos. You don’t have to do them immediately after you get engaged, anytime during the engagement is appropriate! Heck, you could do them a week before the wedding, if you wanted to. There’s no rule. When my husband and I had our engagement photos done, we had been engaged for five months. But we thought the Calgary fall colours would be the nicest time to have portraits done. And I’m so happy we did them.

I urge all of my clients to go for the engagement photos. Since they are included, they don’t earn me any extra money, and I’m not trying to push an unneeded sale. But I do feel strongly that they are an important part of my wedding photography package, and as your photographer, it’s something I advocate to ensure a bride and groom get the most value out of the investment they are making.

This past weekend here in Calgary was optimal for photos — fall leaves, and warm weather with beautiful sunshine. I had a number of photo sessions and was extremely glad the weather cooperated. During one shoot at Confederation Park, I counted at least six wedding parties there at the same time, each with their photographers in tow. Seriously, the place was swarming with newlyweds and their photographers, I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Even Riley Park on a Saturday didn’t quite match up with this. Wedding parties were lined up to take their turn, each waiting to shoot at scenic spots. The arched bridge was a popular spot that didn’t spend much time without a bride and a groom on it. Sunday was a bit quieter for the engagement session I did with Heather & Bryan. I wanted to share a few sneak peeks:

They are a gorgeous couple to photograph, and easy to get along with. I’m really looking forward to shooting their wedding in December, I think we’re all hoping we get a slightly different kind of weather — some pretty snow (but just a bit!). Thank you two for a great session!
